What is Boolean?

The boolean search logic is a tool for writing complex search strings fine-tuned to your information needs. Boolean operators allow you to specify the relationships between your search terms. With parentheses, you can group many operators into one string.

Best Practices:

  • Remember that searches are keyword literal, so you’ll only get results containing terms as entered. If you want to see articles referencing cars, as well as automobiles, then search for ("cars" OR "automobiles")
  • Boolean queries can get complicated, but don’t get overwhelmed or carried away. Start by making your searches as simple as possible and add complexity only when it adds value.
  • Search is iterative. Good searches are refined over time. Look for patterns in your results and use this information to improve the search itself.

Boolean in Cision Comms Cloud:

Boolean is relatively common, and chances are that you regularly use a search engine or another resource (like LinkedIn) that supports Boolean to build complex queries. While the basic logic is the same across the board, there are differences in the operators supported by each platform and how exactly they work.

There are two sets of Boolean logic that you can use in the Comms Cloud, depending on the area of the platform you are working in. The first set of rules applies to the ongoing media monitoring and archive searches that deliver news into your system; this syntax supports additional operators to refine your coverage.

The second set of rules applies to the front-end areas of the system, where you can use simpler keyword searches to organise and locate your coverage. Use these operators in tandem with the advanced filtering and search options on the system's front end to find what you need.
