Adding Articles to News Coverage

Modified on: Tue, 22 Nov, 2022 at 2:00 PM

You can view and examine the news coverage described by a chart widget. You can click on a data point in the chart itself and filter by date range to see granular information for a particular period or get a more holistic view of the chart widget's entire date range's Detail View.

To Access the Detailed List View for a Search Name:

  1. Click in the Legend of the chart widget. If the chart has a multi-series legend (more than one metric is displayed), select the series or metric for which you want to see coverage. Alternatively, you can click on any data point in the widget for articles from a specific Publication Date for all included searches.

2. When the news detail view opens, you will find each article listed by row with data for each article in columns. You can click on the Columns icon to select the following information to display:

  • Mention contains the headline and first lines of the article content. Click on the Add tag button to tag the article.
  • Outlet names the publication in which the article or mention appeared. Click on the outlet name to open the mini card for research and list management.
  • Author information provides byline information. NOTE: We do not always receive byline information as part of the monitoring process. Click on the author's name to open the outlet mini card to perform research and list management.
  • Publication Date of the article.
  • Shares include the number of shares of the article on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and Reddit.
  • Article Impact shows the impact score of the article as low, medium, or high.
    • Articles added to My Coverage before January 25, 2021Cision's Article Impact is a blended metric that allows you to balance the readership, social amplification, and sentiment of an article into a single, sortable measurement.  Social amplification has the most weight, followed by readership, with the intensity of the sentiment being the smallest factor.
      • What do we mean by the intensity of sentiment? Both positive and negative articles can be a high impact. We look at how intense this positive or negative sentiment is and factor that into the Article's Impact. Article Impact is not on a set scale (0-100, for example), and because it varies with every article's unique combination of values, we don't have hard numbers for readership or social that we can say will make an article "high impact" or "low impact"
    • Articles added to My Coverage after January 25, 2021Cision's Article Impact score gives you an 'at a glance' indicator of an article's significance by blending several different metrics (readership, social amplification, domain authority, and sentiment) into one easily sortable value. Using proprietary technology and algorithms, Cision uses the above metrics and weighs them based on the intensity to identify high, medium, and low-impact articles across all article types.
      • Article Impact is not on a set scale (0-100, for example), and because it varies with every article's unique combination of values, we don't have hard numbers for metrics that we can say will make an article "high impact" or "low impact." Instead, we look at each matric's intensity and possible impact to give an article a score.
        • What do we mean by the intensity of sentiment? Both positive and negative articles can be a high impact. We look at how intense this positive or negative sentiment is and factor that into the Article's Impact.
  • Sentiment uses keywords and phrases in the article to determine if the tone is positive, negative or neutral.

All articles with the same body, same headline, and originating from different outlets will be grouped.

  1. The article with the most recent publication date/time will act as the primary article in the group in the Listing Page.
  2. To see all articles in the syndicated group, click on the primary article.

In the example below, you will see 3 Total Mentions, but only two articles are listed because the first article is found in two publications.

3. As you hover over each article, you will see options appear on the right-hand side, allowing you to do the following: Apply Tags (tag icon), View the Full Article (diagonal arrow icon), Delete the Mention(article) from the Chart Data (trash icon),  or Share the Article (Ellipses). You may also select multiple articles to perform these activities by checking the box on the left in the Mention column for the articles you wish to include.

4. Select the number of mentions per page (50-200 mentions) and move through pages using the arrow icons.

5. Click on the magnifying glass icon to Search for keywords.

6.  Click on the Ellipses button in the upper-right of the news detail view to export the data into Excel (.CSV, .SCSV, .XLS, .XLSX).

7. Add additional articles using the Add Article URLs button.

NOTE: You will receive an error message if the article cannot be successfully added with the URL.

Reasons that an article may not be added via an URL include:

  • The link you attempt to add does not include all article requirements (headline, body text, author, publish date, and publisher). In this instance, you can open a chat window for a Customer Support Representative to look at the content at the link to determine if it can be added.
  • The publication is partially behind a paywall or is subscription based. It may be possible to add; however, this is only a task that can be completed by a Customer Support Representative.
  • The link is a PDF, video, or audio file, which is not supported in the platform. If the content at the link is PDF, only video and audio, this content will not be able to be added to the platform under any circumstance. In many cases, video issues can be resolved by going to the site that hosts the video.  If you do not believe the content at the link fits into any of these categories, please open a chat window to talk with a Customer Support Representative.
  • Coding at the end of the URL prevents the link from being recognized. This is very specific to article URLs from Forbes.com. Forbes URLs all carry a unique code at the end of every URL, which changes every time the article page is refreshed. In this instance, to add the article independently, remove the code at the end of the URL, then use that shortened URL in the Add Article URLs window:
