Set Up Facebook and Instagram Authentication Tokens in Cision Social Listening

Modified on: Thu, 8 Dec, 2022 at 6:06 PM

You can use Cision Social Listening to find, explore, and monitor important topics and conversations on Facebook and Instagram. To get started, you need to create authentication tokens for your Facebook Pages and Instagram Business accounts and then add the Pages, accounts, and hashtags you want to track. This allows Cision Social Listening to collect all the data you’re interested in and return the most relevant results for your search queries.

NOTE: For non-owned channels, your user authorisation for content will expire after 60 days, requiring you to reach out to the channel owner to re-authenticate. (They will receive an email to the email associated with their Facebook account that it needs to be re-authenticated, and the token will switch from "Active" to "Inactive" in Cision Social Listening until they re-authenticate).

For owned channels, re-authentication will be required should you change your password.

Create an Authentication Token:

1. Click on the Social Listening tab.

2. Select the Gear icon in the upper right of the page and then select Manage tokens and targeted data.

3. Select Connect with Facebook to authenticate with your Facebook account.

4. Select Continue as (profile name).

5. Select the Next button.
Optional: Select the Instagram Business accounts you want to link before clicking the Next button.

6. Select the Facebook Pages you want to use, then select Next.

7. Select the privacy settings you wish to include, then select Done.

8. Select OK.

If a pop-up appears, review and select the pages you want Cision Social Listening to have access to, and then select Allow.

If you don't have access to the Facebook account you wish to authenticate:

You can invite the account admin or another person with access to the account to authenticate on your behalf. The recipient of the link doesn't need to be a Cision Social Listening member to authenticate the Facebook account. Select Copy to copy the link and then share it with the person who can authenticate on your behalf.

Viewing Authentication Tokens in the Facebook Tokens Table:

NOTE: If one of your Facebook tokens has an Inactive status, select Connect with Facebook at the top and try repeating the previous steps.

There are two types of tokens, depending on the permissions you select during the authentication process:

  1. User tokens are created when you authenticate with Facebook but don’t grant CisionSocial Listening access to the Facebook Page on which you have a role.
    • User tokens can be used to target any public Facebook Page that is visible to you. Adding this page as a targeted data source allows Cision Social Listening to collect all the public wall posts and comments on that Page.
    • To learn more about how to include these pages as targeted data sources, scroll down to the following section below: Add the Pages, Accounts, and Hashtags You Want to Monitor.
  2. Page tokens are created when you authenticate with Facebook and grant CisionSocial Listening access to the Facebook Page on which you have a role.
    • Page tokens give Cision Social Listening elevated access to the content on that page, including the ads posted on that Page and the comments on those ads.
    • Additionally, if you grant Cision Social Listening access to an Instagram Business Account linked to your Facebook Page, Cision Social Listening can also collect content from Instagram.
    • This includes up to 30 targeted hashtags within a rolling 7-day period, media posted by that account, and engagement with that account (comments, favourites, @mentions).
